Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine combines current advances in health with natural, non-invasive methods of healing. A Naturopathic Doctor works to balance the whole body, supporting each organ system. The philosophical premise of naturopathic medicine is that all true healing occurs as a result of the bodies own inherent healing forces. Therefore we concentrate on whole patient wellness, the medicine is tailored to the individual patient and emphasizes prevention and self-care. Naturopathic medicine works to find the underlying cause of the patient´s condition rather than focusing solely on treatment of symptoms offering an alternative to prescription medication and surgery. We also cooperate with all other branches of medical science, referring patients to other practitioners for diagnosis or treatment when appropriate. More Info....
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a system of medicine used to balance the body´s energy through the use of needles. It works through the flow of qi (vital force/energy) in the meridians (pathways that cover the body) and organs of the body. Each pathway is associated with a particular physiological system and internal organ. Acupuncture allows qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and away from where it is in excess. If qi is obstructed in its flow, pain will occur. Acupuncture can restore health by removing energy imbalances and blockages in the body. Through talking with the patient, feeling the pulses, looking at the tongue and other western diagnostic tools, the practitioner can determine which organ systems are out of balance and thus which points require needle stimulation. Chinese Medicine and Herbal Formulas
Chinese herbal medicine is a form of treatment that has been practiced for over 2,000 years. Arising from a holistic philosophy, it emphasizes the interconnectedness between the mental, emotional, and physical systems of the body. It is a highly systematized and integral aspect of Chinese Medicine that works harmoniously with acupuncture treatments. Chinese herbs can be used to strengthen and build the body´s constitution in deficient and weakened conditions. They also can be used to decrease the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms, stop bleeding, reduce abdominal bloating, relieve constipation and more. There are thousands of herbs in the Chinese pharmacopia consisting of plants, minerals and animal products. Chinese herbs are usually combined into formulas containing anywhere from 3 to 20 herbs in synergistic combinations.
Nutritional Consultations
What we eat plays an important role in how we feel and a diet that is unbalanced either in quality or quantity can create imbalance within the body. Never before has our food contained so many chemicals in the form of preservatives, flavorings, colorings, emulsifiers, hormones and antibiotics as well as the residue of pesticides and fertilizers from modern farming methods. Consequently it makes sense to eat as clean a diet as possible. We offer nutritional consultations based on food allergy lab test results, as well as your Chinese diagnosis. For example, we may suggest that you eliminate specific foods or add them to your diet.
Moxibustion
This an ancient form of heat therapy using the plant Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) that is either rolled into sticks and waved around acupuncture needles for indirect moxa or made into tiny cones and burned on ointment for direct moxa. When acupuncture needles are in the body, the indirect moxa heats them, and the metal conducts heat down into the muscles. Moxa Acupuncture and Moxibustion are commonly used together and can be used to treat sore muscles, bronchial asthma, bronchitis, certain types of paralysis and arthritic disorders.
Electro Acupuncture This is the application of a pulsating electrical current to acupuncture needles as a means of stimulating acupuncture points. The needles are then attached to a device which generates continuous electric pulses using small clips. Electro Acupuncture uses two needles at a time so the impulses can pass from one needle to the other. Several pairs of needles can be stimulated simultaneously. Electro Acupuncture is considered to be especially useful for conditions in which there is an accumulation of qi, such as in chronic pain syndromes, post surgery, or in cases where the qi is difficult to stimulate.
Cupping
This is a method of stimulating Acupuncture points by applying glass cups that create a suction on the skin in which a partial vacuum is created. This technique produces blood congestion at the site, and thus stimulates blood flow. Cupping is commonly used for low backache, sprains, soft tissue injuries, common cold symptoms and to help relieve fluid from the lungs in bronchitis.
Ear Acupuncture/Auriculotherapy
The ear has many Acupuncture points which correspond to many parts and organs of the body. Auricular therapy is widely used for many conditions, including addiction treatment, mood disorders, obesity, pain, and other conditions. Ear acupuncture is generally incorporated into a regular acupuncture treatment. In addition to using acupuncture points on the rest of the body, your acupuncturist may select a few ear acupuncture points that he or she feels will be helpful for your particular condition. Ear acupuncture points may be stimulated for a longer period of time by using ear seeds. Ear seeds are small silver balls that are held in place on the ear with a small piece of adhesive tape. Ear seeds may be left in the ear for a few days or up to two weeks.
Naturopathic Pediatrics
The philosophy of naturopathic pediatric care is truly preventive. The goal is to support the natural immunity processes in the child´s body. Ensuring that the proper building blocks are provided to flourish, maintain health and vitality, is essential. We correct any deficiencies through the use of proper nutrition, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, protein, essential sugars and calories. We provide assistance to fight off infection using homeopathy, botanical medicines, vitamins and minerals. We protect gut immunity with probiotics, which are natural bacterial organisms that promote proper gut health. We look at stressors such as chemicals, emotional struggles or dietary allergens that may be lowering the child´s immunity and try to help parents problem solve in correcting the imbalance. We are happy to refer your child to the best specialists in Durango when we feel that specialty care is needed. We enjoy the little patients and take great pleasure in their growth, their development and their happiness.

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a scientific system of healing developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy is based on the principles of like cures like. For example, large doses of Ipecac given in the hospital will cause one to vomit, but given homeopathically it will inhibit this urge. It works on the emotional body, much like peeling the layers of an onion, allowing the innate vital force of the body to correct and imbalances. Homeopathy uses minute doses of natural substances including plants, minerals or animal products to stimulate the body's own ability to heal itself. There are over 3,500 homeopathic remedies that your practitioner chooses from to best match your symptomatic state. Homeopathy is non toxic and will not interfere with any herbs, supplements or medications.
Flower Essences
Flower essences are diluted extracts of various types of flowers and plants that are used to treat animals and people. They are similar to homeopathic remedies in that they are diluted and potentized to make them more effective than just using the original flower as a herbal extract. The person who first developed the original flower remedies was Dr. Edward Bach, a famous English physician. He developed the Bach Flower Remedies when he was working as a homeopathic practitioner and devoted the last years of his life to researching and developing his remedies. Dr. Bach believed that diseases of the body come about as a result of imbalances or negativity at the level of the soul, and by correcting the problem here healing would result and the body would heal on all levels. The flower remedies act to balance the emotional and spiritual body, and bring about a gentle healing by bringing the body back in balance with itself. They work in conjunction with herbs, homeopathy and medications. They are safe for everyone, including children, pregnant women, pets, elderly and even plants.
"Health depends on being in harmony with our souls."
Dr. Edward Bach M.B, B.S., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P, D.P.H
Biotherapeutic Drainage
Biotherapeutic drainage is a philosophy and methodology of healing which has been practiced in Europe for more than 100 years. They are remedies which promote a gentle elimination of toxins, enhancing the excretory functions of a particular organ or organ system. The reason this is necessary can be compared to repainting your home. Before you actually paint, you must wash the walls, repair the holes and then prepare the surface to receive the paint. If you paint the wall before removing impurities, the job will soon begin to break down and will likely have to be redone before long, the same is true in healing the body. This is why drainage is essential in order to help restore your body and vitality to what you want it to be. Mikhael Adams, N.D., one of the pioneering practitioners of Drainage in North America, defines Drainage as, "the process of detoxifying the body by opening the routes of elimination (emunctories) and discharging the toxic accumulations." Once there has been the gentle elimination of toxins, (the walls have been washed and repaired using our painting analogy), other therapeutics are then available for use to help you achieve and maintain a level of optimal health. We will often utilize Drainage remedies, specifically the UNDA numbers, especially for detoxification to start the process of cleansing and clearing your tissues of toxic accumulations which will help you on your path to a higher level of health. |
